Baku hosts conference on preventing ideology of extremism in Caucasus
Baku, September 29 (AZERTAC). The Azerbaijani-Russian conference on “Preventing the ideology of extremism in the Caucasus” took place in Baku on Thursday. The conference was organized by the Board of the Caucasian Muslims and Moscow State Linguistic University.
Chief of the Presidential Administration`s department for socio-political affairs Ali Hasanov addressing the conference said “Armenia`s attempts to disrupt stability and tolerance in the South Caucasus undermine stability in the region.”
“Azerbaijan lost 20% of its territories as a result of the Armenian aggression. Acts of terrorism have been committed in our territory, but the Armenian people are also victims of this extremism,” Hasanov said, referring to the occupation of Karabakh and the surrounding area by Armenian troops.
“Azerbaijan is an example of tolerance across the world and this policy was continued after national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev came to power," Hasanov underscored.
Head of the Caucasus Muslims Department Allahshukur Pashazadeh speaking at the conference said "one of the main achievements of recent years is the religious and moral revival, and both national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev and current President Ilham Aliyev played an invaluable role in this policy."
“We have always thought that the only road leading the peoples of the Caucasus to a happy future is inter-faith dialogue, a policy of neighborliness and the observance of territorial integrity,” Pashazadeh underscored.
“I think that today we have the opportunity to resolve all the problems in the Caucasus, including the running sore for Azerbaijan, the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, on the just principles of peace, international law, territorial integrity and mutual understanding,” the Sheikh said.
The conference delegates adopted a statement urging authorities and the public to prevent war.
"Religious figures appeal to the international community not to give any moral, financial or military-technical support to terrorist and extremist groups. We do not accept violence, terrorism or extremism in any guise. Therefore, we call upon the authorities and society to do their utmost to prevent wars and acts of terrorism in the Caucasus and other regions of the CIS," the statement says.
The conference has brought together religious figures, representatives of state and general public of Azerbaijan and Russia.
