Conference on media held in Baku
Baku, July 18 (AZERTAC). A conference entitled “Transition from traditional mass media to online media” on Monday was held in Baku.
The event co-organized by the Council of Europe, European Union, Azerbaijan’s Press Council, OSCE Office in Baku and the UK embassy to Azerbaijan aims to share international experience in traditional and online media sphere.
Addressing the event, Chairman of Azerbaijan’s Press Council Aflatun Amashov noted that holding of such events had given a push on development of the media.
He noted that currently, 40 dailies, 200 weeklies, 14 regional and cable TVs, more than 30 Internet providers, as well as several portals function in Azerbaijan.
He also said that more than one million citizens of Azerbaijan use social networks like Facebook and Twitter.
Deputy Chief of the Presidential Administration`s Social and Political Affairs Department Arastun Mehdiyev stressed importance of support to traditional media, as well as attention to online media.
He also noted that Azerbaijan attached great importance to providing freedom of speech and information, increasing of the independence of the press.
“Discussions of these issues will positively influence to the further development of the press, the regulation of the media-society, media-state relations” he added.
Advisor on Political issues of the EU Representation in Azerbaijan Andrey Valentinov stressed importance of feedom of thought and expression and role of the media in modern democratic societies.
Head of the OSCE Office in Baku Koray Targay noted that holding of such conferences would contribute to the further development of media in the country.
Council of Europe Secretary General’s Special Representative to Azerbaijan Constantin Yerocostopoulos, UK Ambassador Peter Bateman also stressed importance of such events for development of media.
