Gems of Julfa – Khanegah, architectural complex in Nakhchivan

Often described as one of the world’s oldest inhabited places - Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, which is an integral part of Azerbaijan, abounds in sights of historical, cultural and religious significance.
This is especially true of its Julfa region, where one can visit a number of fascinating places, such as Gulustan Tomb, Alinja Castle, Ashabi-Kahf Cave, Mount Ilandagh and Khanegah, to name a few.
Khanegah, which is an architectural complex siting by the Alinja river in the village of Khanegah, consists of a tomb, mosque and other buildings dating back to the 12th-13th centuries.
The site served as a religious retreat for dervishes who lived and worshipped here. The tomb contains an unnamed grave believed to belong to Fazlullah Naimi, the founder of Hurufism (a branch of Sufism), who was imprisoned in nearby Alinja Castle and executed for his religious views.
The complex has been lovingly restored and is well worth a visit both for the history and the terrific views.
