MEETING OF NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS IN BAKU

A meeting of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of the republic with representatives of governmental organs and parliamentarians was held on August in the Baku office of OSCE. The participants of the meeting discussed the issues of simplification of NGOs registration by official organs of the country.

The international organizations intend to promote the resolution of NGOs’ registration problems promoting establishment of a civil society in Azerbaijan.

Making speech to the session, the head of OSCE Baku office, Ambassador Peter Buchard said that NGOs play a vitally important role in foundation of any society and are considered as a starting point of development of democratic norms of a state. “Strength, independence and determination of non-governmental sector is a fundamental component in the development of a healthy civil society”, he said. An open closeness between the government and independent NGOs is a significant evidence of changes in Azerbaijan. Buchard added. “We convince the administration to change its policy towards non-governmental organizations”, he said.

The meeting gathered over 70 participants. They discussed different legal aspects of NGO’s rights defense and took a decision to address the President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev, Prime Minister Ilham Aliyev and Minister of Justice Fikret Mamadov by a request letter to render assistance in resolution of NGOs’ problems.
