Milan labeled AIDS capital of Italy
Baku, December 2 (AZERTAC). In Italian city of Milan at least 15,000 people are HIV-positive, the municipal department of health said in a statement as the world braced for the World AIDS Day on Wednesday.
According to the statement, two out of 11 Italians infected each day with HIV live in Milan, which makes it "the AIDS capital of Italy".
Of the estimated 4,000 to 6,000 new infections per year in Italy, over 30 percent concern the northern city. Lombardy region, whose capital is Milan, has an estimated number of more than 40, 000 HIV infections.
Almost 50 percent of HIV infections are acquired through unprotected sexual relations, and of much concern is the fact that an HIV-positive in four does not know it.
To contrast misinformation and lack of prevention, which are the main causes of the contagion, Milan authorities invited all citizens not to lower the guard.
On the occasion of the World AIDS Day, health prevention and information campaigns were launched in Milan, while an ultra rapid HIV test was available for free in the city`s landmarks.
