Severe cold in India – At least 50 deaths so far

Extreme cold coupled with accidents in dense fog claimed 12 more lives in the 24 hours leading to Wednesday evening, taking the death toll due to the harsh winter to 92 in the state since December 1.

The state government sanctioned Rs 1.63 crore for 75 districts in UP, around Rs 3.45 lakh for each district, for night shelters, bonfires and blankets for the poor and street dwellers. Out of this money, each tehsil in the state will get Rs 50,000. Relief commissioner Leena Jauhari said the amount released on Wednesday was in addition to the Rs 17.98 lakh released on November 12, 2014 for providing relief from the cold wave.

The maximum temperature at most places in the state was 4-10 degrees below normal and the minimum was 3-5 degrees below normal. Muzaffarnagar was the coldest in the state with a minimum temperature 2.4 degree Celsius followed by Lucknow with 2.5 degree Celsius and Shahjahanur 3.6 degree Celsius.
