The Telegraph publishes article on Azerbaijan`s ancient game “Chovkan”
The Telegraph has published an article on intangible cultural heritages of UNESCO, including ancient Azerbaijani game “Chovkan”.
Headlined “From Turkish coffee to human towers: UNESCO's intangible heritage”, the article says: “Originally, the UNESCO World Heritage list was reserved for buildings, monuments and sites of natural beauty. But in 2003, UNESCO agreed to start adding “intangible heritage”, and since then a number of more eccentric choices have been added to the list.”
It highlights Chovkan, saying that inscribed in 2013, it is “a local form of polo in which teams of five try to hammer a leather or wooden ball into a goal while being serenaded with local folk music known as janghi”.
The article is accompanied by a promotional video about Chovkan made by Azerbaijan`s Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
