UNDP AND ANAMA TO BRIEF DONORS ON MINE ACTION SITUATION
The main goal of the briefing is to provide the donor community including representatives of the donor countries and international organizations, key related government agencies and NGOs with information on the achievements made in mine action, as well as plans for the future.
The history of mine action in Azerbaijan began from the day the President of Azerbaijan signed a decree on 18 July 1998 establishing the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA). In April 1999, UNDP and the Government of Azerbaijan launched a joint project, Azerbaijan Mine Action Program, to assist in the development of national mine action capacity to deal with the existing landmine problem in Azerbaijan. At a later stage, ANAMA was developed into a national mine action institution.
Two national NGOs are currently operating within the Programme undertaking clearance tasks in Fizuli, Agjabedi, Agstafa and Khanlar districts.
EC funded Landmine Impact Survey in 2003 confirmed that Azerbaijan suffers from extensive landmine and UXO contamination in the war-torn districts along the cease-fire and borderline.
Since its inception, the Programme has mobilized over US$ 10 million comprised of contributions from US, EC, UK, Japan, Norway, Canada and Italy.
Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Abid Sharifov and UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Marco Borsotti will chair the donor meeting.
