WUF13 participant: Sustainable urban development requires efficient land use VIDEO

“In a period of rapid urbanization, the development of urban agriculture and issues of food security are of particular importance,” Samuel Ikua Thiong`o, Project Officer at the Mazingira Institute in Nairobi and the UN-Habitat International Coalition, who is participating in WUF13, told AZERTAC.
Highlighting the importance of efficient land use in urban planning, the project officer added: “When residential buildings are constructed, land should also be allocated for urban agriculture. As urban populations grow and migration from rural areas continues, food supply and food security face increasing risks. Preserving adequate agricultural areas in cities is essential to ensure access to affordable, high-quality, and safe food for the population.”
