2500 anniversary of Marathon to be marked in Azerbaijan
Baku, November 1 (AZERTAC). The 2500th anniversary of the Marathon race will be marked in Baku on December 13, the Embassy of Greece in Azerbaijan said.
Anniversary actions which will also pass in more than 200 countries are organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Greece. Anniversary actions started on October 31 in Athens.
As is known, in 490 year B.C. the Athenian state has won a victory over army of the Persian Empire near to the place, named the Marathon. According to a legend, the Greek soldier by name Pheidippides has run, without stopping, 42 km 195 m from the Marathon to Athens, has run in the Acropolis to announce the defeat of the Persians. He said: "We have won", and died of exhaustion. Now, running on a distance of 42.195 km is called as a marathon.
