65 years pass since UN`s establishment
Baku, October 25 (AZERTAC). Sixty five years ago, on October 24, 1945 founding Charter of the United Nations came into force.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, in his speech at the 65th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2010, said that “Azerbaijan demonstrates full support and undertakes ceaseless efforts for promotion of sustainable development and global prosperity for all, paying particular attention to addressing the special needs and vulnerabilities of the developing and least developed countries, as well as those who are recovering from natural disasters. Azerbaijan will continue to contribute for the realization of the development goals and objectives agreed within the United Nations”.
Azerbaijan signed UN Millennium Development Declaration at a summit in New York in 2000, where world leaders promised to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the areas of health, gender equality, education and sustainable environment by 2015.
Over the last few years, Azerbaijan has enjoyed a rapid economic growth driven by a large increase in oil and gas revenues and subsequently made a tremendous success in reducing poverty from 49 percent in 2001 to 11 percent in 2009, in addition to the prospects of achieving most of the MDGs.
Azerbaijan joined the United Nations in March 1992.
