AZERBAIJAN COOPERATES WILL ALL COUNCIL OF EUROPE STRUCTURES
After Azerbaijan has become full member of the Council of Europe in 2001, it closely cooperates with all structures of this Organization, including Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Mr. Asadov underlined. We attach great importance to teaching experience of the European countries related to municipalities, he said. And this visit will play due role in efficient organization of the activities of municipalities of Azerbaijan.
Chairman of Milli Majlis said the Azerbaijan Parliament had adopted about 20 laws connected to municipalities. After the elections conducted in November last year, 60 percent of parliamentarians have been renewed. The current parliament will adopt new laws concerning activity of the local authorities, he emphasized.
Mr. Giovanni Di Stasi said the organization he represents is interested in development of links with Azerbaijan. Activity of the municipalities is attentively leaned. The Council of Europe gives due attention to democracy in local governance. Transfer of a part of powers to the municipalities is very important. It, of course, needs certain time. And the Council of Europe stands ready to render any assistance to Azerbaijan in this cause.
In the meeting, also were exchanged views on a number of questions of mutual interest.
