Azerbaijani pilgrim dies on way to Karbala

Baku, October 14 (AZERTAC). An Azerbaijani pilgrim who was travelling to the holy city of Karbala has been killed as the car he was in ran over a mine in an Iraqi province, according to Azerbaijan`s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Ministry said a Hyundai blew up on the mine killing one Azerbaijani pilgrim and injuring others when they were passing through Diyala Province.

The car was following a bus with Azerbaijani pilgrims.

The pilgrim who died was identified as Intigam Rustamov, the Ministry said in the statement.

The Ministry cited Azerbaijan`s embassy in Jordan as saying that the injured were taken to hospital in Baqubah province, with one, Elvin Aslanov, taken to hospital in Bagdad for a surgery on his leg.

The embassy is now working to get the body of the killed pilgrim returned to Azerbaijan, according to the Ministry.

The Ministry said the pilgrims who were in the bus were not affected by the explosion.

The Ministry added it had repeatedly warned Azerbaijani citizens against travelling to Iraq.
