Death toll from floods in south of Russia rises to 14
Baku, October 18 (AZERTAC). Fourteen people have perished as a result of floods in the Krasnodar Region, the fate of nine others is unknown, the press centre of the Southern branch of the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations told ITAR-TASS on Monday. By 07. 00 a.m. Monday the death toll has risen to 14, including twelve identified victims. The fate of nine more people, reported missing, is unknown, the source said.
Search efforts continue in the settlements of Shaumyan, Kirpichnoye and Georgiyevskoye. Twenty-eight local residents have asked for medical assistance, specified reports say.
Heavy rains hit the territory of Tuapse district last weekend. The rains have caused river floods that pose a threat to the population. As a result of the floods the water level in the Pshenakha and Tuapsinka rivers went up, flooding seven areas numbering 17 settlements. A state of emergency has been introduced in the Tuapse district, where more than 2,000 people and 500 houses turned out to be in the flooded zone.
Forty-five local residents evacuated from the flooded area are staying now at the "Avtotransportnik " vacation center, which has been turned into a temporary shelter for flood victims. The residents of the temporary shelter have been provided with all the essentials and hot meals.
Power supply to 37 flooded private houses was cut off to prevent an electric shock, the source said.
