As of 1 July 2006, the population of Azerbaijan made up 8 million 483 thousand people. The population increased by 47 thousand people or 0.6% for the past six months. 4 million 381 thousand (51.6%) people live in cities while 4 million 102 thousand people live in rural areas.

4 million 175 thousand people (49%) are males while 4 million 308 thousand (51%) females. The average sex ratio is roughly 1032 women for every 1000 men.

The mean age of the population is 31 years. Life expectancy of those born is 72.4 years: males 69.6 years and females 75.1 years.

In the first half of this year, 74.2 thousand children were born in Azerbaijan. The number of babies per 1000 people comes to 18. Today, there is an average of two babies for every woman during her lifetime.

33.8 thousand marriages and 4.1 thousand divorces have been registered in Azerbaijan since early 2006. In comparison with that of the same period last year, the number of marriages per 1000 people increased while the number of divorces slightly decreased.
