FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS WITH EUROPEAN COMMISSIONER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS
Informing the visitors on the results of the recent Paris negotiations between the Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Robert Kocharyan of Armenia, the Minister said the official stance of his country’s leadership was that the conflict must be settled within the norms and principles of the international law and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
Ms. Benita-Ferrero Waldner said she supports the efforts towards peaceful resolution of the conflict, and expressed readiness of the European Union to be closely involved in restoration works after the problem is solved.
Minister Mammadyarov noted Azerbaijan is interested in integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures, and expressed confidence that adoption of the plan of activities being prepared within the European Neighborhood Policy would play an important role in enhancing the cooperation between Azerbaijan and European Union.
They exchanged views on the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace talks, transportation of hydrocarbons from Azerbaijan to Europe, energy security, and cooperation in preventing bird flu outbreak in Azerbaijan and Europe and other issues.
Following the meeting Elmar Mammadyarov and Ms. Benita-Ferrero Waldner gave a press conference, during which the Minister in particular announced that on 24-25 February, Baku will host a conference related to energy issues to be attended by European representatives. Ms. Waldner described Azerbaijan’s involvement in the New Neighborhood Policy as a new page opened in the country’s cooperation with European Union.
