Baku, October 6 (AZERTAC). Hungary`s national flag was flown at half-mast with military honors in front of the Parliament on Wednesday to commemorate the martyrs of Hungary`s ill-fated war of independence in 1848-49, according to MTI.

The flag was lowered in the presence of President Pal Schmitt, Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Speaker of Parliament Laszlo Kover.

It was on this day in 1849 that twelve Hungarian generals and a colonel were executed in Arad (today in Romania) under a verdict by an Austrian court-martial. Count Lajos Batthyany, prime minister of

Hungary`s first answerable and independent government, was executed in Pest (today Budapest) on that same day.

October 6 was declared the Day of National Mourning in 2001.
