INDONESIA RAIL CRASH KILLS 43 PEOPLE
Baku, October 2 (AZERTAC). At least 43 people have been killed and dozens more injured when a passenger train smashed into another train in Indonesia`s java island.
The two trains collided at a station in Petarukan Pemalang, Central Java province, on Saturday. According to the Indonesian police a traffic management error was to blame for the accident.
The Associated Press quoted Cendana Banandi, a government life insurance official, as putting the death toll at around 43.
He says the incident left more than 50 injured, many of whom wounded seriously.
Officials say many children are among the dead. Many people are still trapped in the wreckage.
"The number of victims could still increase because the evacuation is ongoing," transport ministry spokesman, Bambang Ervan, told the Antara news agency.
Low investment limiting the repair and safety of vital infrastructure has caused serious transportation accidents in recent year in Indonesia.
