JUBILEE OF FIRST COSMONAUT MARKED IN BAKU
Prior to the party, was demonstrated a documentary narrating on the lifetime and activity of Yuri Gagarin, the first man in the outer space.
Expressing his gratitude to the public representatives of Azerbaijan for attention to the loving memory of the legendary cosmonaut, ambassador of Russia to Azerbaijan Nikolay Ryabov noted that in April 1961, thanks to Yuri Gagarin, was opened a new page in the history of humanity - history of opening of the cosmos. “Gagarin was truly an outstanding man, who realized the dream of millions of people. Conquering the cosmos, he presented us minutes of delight, and we are thankful to hum for this’, Mr. Ryabov said. The Russian diplomat underlined that perhaps Azerbaijan is connected with cosmos, he reminded on contributions of head of the State Commission of the former USSR on the manned flights Karim Karimov and tens of other Azerbaijani scholars. “Contributions of Azerbaijan in the development of cosmonautics is really great, and we hope for continuation in this sphere”, ambassador of Russia stressed.
Then, speaking was vice-president of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Arif Mehdiyev, who said: “Yuri Gagarin embodies all the achievements of mankind in the field of cosmos, opening a new window in our history”. The vice-president reminded that just Baku hosted the first Congress of International Astronomic Association, after which on insistence of the head of the Republic Heydar Aliyev, was opened a scientific center “Caspian”, the key goal of which was to study the Earth from cosmos. At words of A. Mehdiyev, this Center is now functioning as the Azerbaijan national aero-cosmic Agency.
Ambassador of Ukraine to Azerbaijan Boris Aleksenko, in his turn, underlined that 12 April 1961 remained in the hearts of people of the entire planet as the start of conquering cosmos what became the result of colossal labor of thousands of scientists of the former Soviet Union. “It should not be forgotten that the Azerbaijani oil was used for making liquid fuel for cosmic ships, while in the enterprises of the Republic was made high-accuracy devices. Investigation of cosmos made practical contributions in the development of mankind and Azerbaijan can be proud of its merits to conquer cosmos”, the Ukrainian diplomat underlined. Mr. Aleksenko expressed gratitude to the organizers of the arrangement for opportunity to get again in touch with the name of legendary personality.
The event was also attended by representatives of the embassy of China to Azerbaijan and organization “Roszarubezhcentr”.
