Kan Denies Charges over Fukushima Nuclear Plant Accident
Baku, August 15 (AzerTAv). Former Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who was named in a criminal complaint over the March 2011 nuclear accident, has submitted to public prosecutors a statement denying charges of negligence, it was learned Wednesday.
The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office had called on Kan to be questioned, but he rejected the request, saying he sees no need to give verbal explanations to investigative authorities on how he responded to the nuclear accident in his capacity as prime minister, according to informed sources.
Kan was prime minister when Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s <9501> Fukushima No. 1 plant suffered the nation's worst-ever nuclear accident due to severe damage from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit northeastern Japan.
The prosecutors' office has also sought testimony from then Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano and then Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Banri Kaieda.
After closely reviewing their responses, the prosecutors are expected soon to decide not to indict any of the former government officials and former TEPCO executives included in criminal complaints, the sources said.
