MM ENACTS LAW ON AMENDMENTS TO CEDAW
The Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan passed the law on amendments to the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on Tuesday.
Chairperson of the Milli Majlis Standing Commission on Human Rights Rabiyyat Aslanova said the CEDAW entered into force in 1981. Women’s rights in all spheres were indicated in the document.
Under the part 5 of the Convention, a special committee was set up to consider the progress made in the implementation of the Convention. The committee consists of experts reviewing reports on situation in the state parties.
Azerbaijan regularly prepared relevant documents and presented them to the committee. The amendments to the convention envisage the conduct of annual meetings of the committee to review the projects.
Official Baku became the party to the Convention in 1995. The country properly fulfills requirements of the convention and brings the national legislation in line with the convention. International organizations praise Azerbaijan`s accomplishments in safeguarding women`s rights and ensuring gender equality.
