NEFTCHI FANS THREATENED TO BOYCOTT LEAGUE GAMES
The most famous club in Azerbaijan, PFC Neftchi find themselves in an all-time low of tenth position in the league after six games, with supporters threatening to boycott games following the appointment of Coach Hans-Jurgen Gede.
Failing to win a UEFA Cup place contributed to Demyanenko`s dismissal in September, though, with the club appointing Gede - one of the assistants to Azerbaijan`s German national-team coach Berti Vogts - as his successor. Neftchi fans were not impressed, having hoped for a more experienced boss, and turned mutinous after successive goalless draws against bottom of the table PFK Turan Tovuz and FK NBC Salyan.
“We understand our supporters,” said a club spokesman, after fans threatened to boycott subsequent league games. “They have the right to express their displeasure as the team is playing well below expectations at the moment. However, we are asking the fans to be patient as the coach needs some time to build a new team.”
Club vice-president Ilgar Guladze added: “All of us are worried about the results, but Gede`s goal is to win the championship and I`m sure we just need a bit of luck. The results against Turan and NBC were shocking, but anything can happen in football. I can assure you Gede is working 24/7 to find a solution.”
