OIC holds conference on humanitarian crisis in Somalia
Ankara, August 18 (AZERTAC). Executive Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has organized a conference to discuss the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Somalia and its danger to African countries in Istanbul, Turkey.
The conference brought together foreign ministers and ambassadors from 57 countries.
Azerbaijan ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and permanent representative to the OIC Tofig Abdullayev also took part in the conference.
“We had an aim of getting commitments to the tune of 500 million dollars, 350 million dollars of which have been collected with the hope that the remainder is attained shortly," Secretary General of OIC Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said.
"Everyone should mobilize resources at their disposal to end the crisis in Somalia. More than 4 million people in Somalia face death and 60 children die everyday in refugee camps.”
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan underlined his country has thus far collected 100 million dollars for Somali. He and his family will leave for Somali on Friday and will participate in the opening ceremony of hospital in Mogadishu.
