Parliamentary elections kick off in Azerbaijan
Baku, November 7 (AZERTAC). Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. on Sunday, November 7, across Azerbaijan as the country`s citizens start casting ballots in parliamentary elections.
Mazahir Panahov, chief of the country`s Central Election Commission, CEC, told a press conference with local and foreign journalists that necessary conditions had been created at all 5,314 polling stations in 125 constituencies to conduct normal voting.
Azerbaijan`s electorate numbers nearly 4.9 million people. Those who fail to find their names on the voters` list can apply to election commissions in order to cast their votes in accordance with the law.
A total of 690 candidates are running for the Parliament`s seats in the elections which are monitored by 46,639 local and 1,029 international observers. The observers can freely monitor the voting process.
Some 43 journalists representing 18 foreign media outlets have been registered by the CEC to inform the international community of the course of the election. Local journalists are not required any accreditation to cover the voting.
Some 500 polling stations are equipped with webcams to provide internet users with an opportunity to watch the whole voting process online.
Panahov described the preparation for the elections as high-level, adding there can be no alternative to transparent and just elections in a democratic country.
