Recent political repressions in Armenia have intensified COMMENTARY
Baku, December 4, AZERTAC
“Human rights violations, the establishment of a dictatorship, and repressions against civil society representatives in Armenia are not developments of today or yesterday. This is a long-standing illegal and anti-democratic process carried out by Armenian political circles against the Armenian people and society. Unfortunately, both in previous years and now, Western circles — particularly the European Union countries — remain silent about these processes and take no practical measures against Armenia,” political commentator Sahil Karimli told AZERTAC.
According to him, political repressions in Armenia have intensified in recent times. Negative trends are evident, such as the suppression of the opposition, persecution of opposition leaders, and the arrest of journalists and bloggers. “This reflects the violation of media freedom and an increase in injustices and pressure against journalists. The current Pashinyan government has even taken repressive steps against the church. The persecution of clergy and the church indicates a high level of internal tension in Armenia, and regrettably, the silence of the West and EU countries regarding these incidents continues,” he said.
“At the same time, the Nikol Pashinyan authorities may consider their actions justified. Recently, radical and occupation-minded forces in Armenia have become more active, attempting to create tension in the peace treaty process with Azerbaijan. The church, clergy, opposition representatives, and activists aim to weaken Pashinyan in the upcoming parliamentary elections and reduce his support base. Pashinyan, in turn, is responding harshly to these developments. However, this cannot justify human rights violations or illegal actions. The Armenian authorities must ensure legality in all their steps and refrain from violating human rights, freedom of speech, and engaging in repressive practices,” the political commentator emphasized.
