On June 17, President of the European Council Charles Michel made a phone call to President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
President Ilham Aliyev and President Charles Michel exchanged views on the Eastern Partnership countries’ Summit to be held on June 18 via videoconference.
During the conversation, they hailed the importance of the European Union-Azerbaijan relations for both sides, noting that work on the Partnership Agreement between Azerbaijan and the EU is underway.
Pointing out the energy security, the sides emphasized that the Southern Gas Corridor project would contribute to the issue.
The head of state reiterated Azerbaijan’s stance on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, saying that the Armenian leadership's constant attempts to change the format of talks and statements that Nagorno-Karabakh belongs to Armenia not only hinder the settlement of the conflict, but also deal a major blow to the negotiation process. President Ilham Aliyev reiterated that the settlement of the conflict is possible only within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
President Ilham Aliyev and Charles Michel also exchanged views on regional security issues.
They discussed measures taken to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
President Ilham Aliyev and President of the European Council expressed their confidence that the EU-Azerbaijan relations would continue to develop successfully in the best interests of both sides.
