Ribe named Europe`s Best Big-Time Small Destination 2014
Baku, February 25 (AZERTAC). Ribe, the oldest extant Danish town, has been named Europe`s best Big-Time Small Destination in a poll of over 46,000 people.
The poll was led by hotel reservation specialists hotel.info and travel industry aficionados Globalgrasshopper.com.
Devised to give the smaller towns and cities the recognition they deserve, the awards were only open to towns of less than 100,000 inhabitants.
The vote, which concluded on Valentine`s Day 2014, took place across 36 European countries and used social media information as the judging criteria.
The top 52 short-list was then released to the public to vote for the ultimate user favourite, with Ribe, Denmark taking top prize.
Discussing the awards, Country Manager Andreas Klug of hotel.info said: “Too often, big cities with multi-billion dollar marketing budgets are awarded accolades they don`t need or, in some cases, deserve.
“We wanted to highlight the towns across Europe that is really punching above their weight in terms of their reviews, social media standing and picuresque views, hence where the Big-Time Small Destination list was born.”
Arundel (England), Conwy (Wales), Portree (Scotland) and Winchester (England) were the ‘Team GB’ towns shortlisted to face the public vote, but none of the four quintessentially British holiday hotspots made it into the top 10.

A small town that has the award of being Denmark`s oldest, Ribe is certainly a place where there is too much to experience. Lined with cobblestoned streets and timbered houses, you can relax in the atmosphere of cosy cafes and quirky and interesting shops. Why not accompany the Night Watchman on his route as he sings to alert citizens that bedtime is coming whilst he tells you stories about witches, fires and floods. As a major Viking destination, the town pays homage with a Viking Centre that you can wander and marvel in.
