RUSSIA ON THE EVE OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS
According to the polls conducted by the Public Opinion Fund /POF/, over 64,8 percent of voters are expected to vote for Vladimir Putin while about 14 percent of electors intends to vote for other candidates taken together; 2 percent of respondents are going to vote against all while the others will not go to the poll. Moreover, Vladimir Putin is called “president of hopes” and various analytical centers maintain that V. Putin’s electorate is quite active and incorporates all social groups, which hope that he will establish order in Russia.
All the forecasts say Vladimir Putin will score a convincing victory as his rating is far ahead of all contenders. The incumbent President rejected teledebate in favor of active pre-election campaign and took some steps that had had a positive impact on his rating. He dismissed the government and appointed a new Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov who is believed to implement economic and structural reforms in the country.
