SEMINAR ON INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW HELD AT OMBUDSMAN OFFICE
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has held a seminar on the international humanitarian law at the office of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Azerbaijan Republic, according to the Ombudsman press service. Speaking at the event Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova noted the international humanitarian law was aimed to protect people from effects of armed conflicts and wars. Reminding, in this connection, of the occupation of 20% of the Azerbaijani territories, she noted the Armenians had roughly violated the norms and principles of the international humanitarian law by using arms against peaceful population. As a result, thousands of peoples were killed, wounded and taken hostages or prisoners, she said.
The Ombudsman appreciated the ICRC’s efforts to release Azerbaijani servicemen from Armenian captivity, and expressed hope for further cooperation with the organization describing this event as a useful step towards enhancing of this cooperation.
