Strong floods hit 20 of Bangkok`s 50 districts
Baku, October 15 (AZERTAC). Severe flooding in Bangkok has affected 20 of the city`s 50 districts. The worst situation is in the east of the megapolis, where the water level has been up by 0.7 meter.
The Department of Disaster Prevention has said that the period from Sunday through Tuesday will be critical for the capital. The tide in the Gulf of Thailand will complicate the efforts to pump out water, and as a result of torrential rains the Chao Phaya River may overflow. At the same time the authorities have said that everything possible is being done to prevent a catastrophe.
Hundreds of military ships and boats, as well as private yachts, have lined up at the mouth of the Chao Phraya to push water from the river towards the sea with their screws. Army units urgently strengthen the dams and banks along the river. Pumping stations work round the clock.
The death toll from the floods in Thailand - the strongest in a century - has reached 287. The disaster that hit the country in late July has affected about 3 million people. Currently, over two-thirds of the country is flooded. Farmland and rice fields are under water. Hundreds of businesses are closed and many roads in the kingdom have turned into rivers.
