Turkey welcomes Palestine`s membership in UNESCO
Baku, November 2 (AZERTAC). In an official statement, Turkish foreign ministry highly welcomed Palestine`s membership in UNESCO. It also stated that turkey will support bid of the Palestinian Authority to get admittance of full membership in the UN.
“UNESCO`s 36th General Conference which is being held in Paris adopted the resolution concerning Palestine`s UNESCO membership with a great majority of votes on 31 October 2011 and thereby Palestine has become UNESCO`s 195th member. Turkey very much welcomed this outcome. At this stage, recognizing the Palestinian State which represents the Palestinian People is an obligation and a moral duty for the international community. Through admission to UNESCO`s General Conference as a full member, the Palestinians made a great stride towards achieveing their well-deserved status within the international community. Palestine`s membership to UNESCO constitutes a meaningful message to all members of the UN Security Council which is currently considering Palestine`s application for recognition of 23 September 2011. Turkey calls on the members of the UNSCO as well as all members of the international community to act, in the period ahead, taking cognizance of this message. Turkey believes that Palestine`s admission to UNESCO as a member will contribute to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in our region and in this context, supports the restart of the peace negotiations between the parties soon, on the basis of two states.”
