UNESCO marks anniversary of adoption of Constitution
Baku, November 4 (AZERTAC). November 4 is the date when UNESCO officially started its activity.
The Constitution of UNESCO, signed on 16 November 1945, came into force on 4 November 1946 after ratification by twenty countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Greece, India, Lebanon, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.
Its stated purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and the human rights along with fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the UN Charter.
UNESCO has 193 Member States and seven Associate Members.[2][3] The organization is based in Paris, with over 50 field offices and many specialized institutes and centres throughout the world. Most of the field offices are “cluster” offices covering three or more countries; there are also national and regional offices.
Azerbaijan has joined the organization on July 3 in 1992.
The key step for development of relations between Azerbaijan and UNESCO has been done when national leader Heydar Aliyev visited UNESCO headquarters in France and met with the Director-General of the organization Federico Mayor in December of 1993.
On February 21, 1994 the national leader has signed an order for establishment of the National Commission of Azerbaijan for UNESCO.
On 15 September 2005, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed an Order on additional measures related with the National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan for UNESCO.
Up to now, Azerbaijan has signed a number of important documents with UNESCO on scientific, educational and cultural cooperation.
On May 19, 2006 the “Agreement on Implementation of the National Action Plan for the Safeguarding of the Mugham of Azerbaijan as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” was signed between the Government of Azerbaijan and UNESCO.
UNESCO has added the Gobustan State Historical-Artistic Reserve into its World Heritage List.
Icheri sheher has been excluded from the UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger.
The Ashig Art and Novruz Holiday have also been inscribed on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Azerbaijan-UNESCO relations are rapidly developing.
