US DEPARTMENT OF STATE REJECTS CLAIMS OF ARMENIAN LOBBY
At the recently held hearings at the foreign relations committee of Senate, the pro-Armenian Senator George Allen said to the government representatives that should the assistance for Azerbaijan be increased in comparison with Armenia, then it would threaten move in negotiations on Nagorny Karabakh, and it could be explained as biased position of US.
In her interview to the AzerTAj correspondent, dwelling on such claims of the Congressmen, the US Under-Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Elizabeth Johns said: В“As a co-chair of the Minsk Group, the United States cannot support any side in this conflict. As a mediator, we cannot make step contrary to our interest. As for military assistance, its use in the Nagorny Karabakh conflict is not possible. And the assistance is targeted at ensuring security in the Caspian. Today, there is a threat to make the Caspian a passage for terrorists, for transportation of materials for the mass destructions weapons and transit for other trans-national threats. We should raise opportunities of the Azerbaijani marine guards to combat against these threats. Another goal of the military assistance is to modernize the air base the US planes use to fly to Afghanistan. As you see, all these aim at preservation of the national interests of the United States and support of the terror combat. We know that Armenian cannot reject it. For, neither Armenia, nor Russia, and nor other state of the region should wish the Caucasus be used for assistance of terroristsВ”.
