Zbigniew Brzezinski: Azerbaijan proved itself as a successful state"
Washington, November 11 (AZERTAC). A conference on the theme "Relations between the USA and Azerbaijan: condition of strategic partnership" took place in the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, at the initiative of two influential research centers of the United States - the Fund of Jamestown and the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute of Researches of the Johns Hopkins University. In discussions, the leading researchers of the United States on the mentioned region, having considered dynamics of relations between Azerbaijan and the United States last years, made certain recommendations to Obama Administration on the best representation of interests of the United States in this region.
The former adviser of the US president on national security, the adviser of the International Center of the Strategic Researches, known politician Zbigniew Brzezinski, having accepted special invitation of participants of the conference, shared his views connected with relations between the USA and Azerbaijan.
Mr. Brzezinski noted that Azerbaijan, being important "player" in region, has proved itself as successfully developing state. This important progress occurs in the conditions of the long conflict which is an "open wound" of Azerbaijan. As he said, everyone who comes to Azerbaijan becomes the witness of socio-economic development. There are shortages, but they should be estimated from the point of view of historical prospects. Having reminded that building of the sovereign state is difficult process Mr. Brzezinski told that else 40 years back in democracy of America there were also unpleasant gaps.
Naming national leader Heydar Aliyev as the founder of the modern Azerbaijani state, Brzezinski especially underlined that he was the far-sighted leader, who, as the statesman was able to make a strategic choice during the heavy moments. “The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan project was just a strategic choice. “Sovereignty of the state and his people was above all for Heydar Aliyev”, Brzezinski y underlined.
Making comments on the policy of Obama Administration in connection with the South Caucasus region, Zbignev Brzezinski stated that they have certain obligations in relations of the USA with Azerbaijan and Georgia. Armenia in this respect is somehow doubtful.
Noting that the White House has admitted some non-professional irresponsibility concerning Azerbaijan, Mr. Brzezinski regarded as erroneous step that President Ilham Aliyev hasn`t been invited to the nuclear summit passed at the initiative of Barack Obama. He has told that similar steps can have serious consequences. Despite it, the former adviser considers that Ilham Aliyev and Barack Obama remained agreed with the meeting which has taken place in New York.
Having noted that the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict causes damage to all region Mr. Brzezinski stressed that in the final resolution of conflict it should be solved not only the status of Nagorno Karabakh, but also the question of long occupation of the adjoining territories. As he said, West influence can`t solve the problem completely. The conflict parties should be interested in it. The USA does not support military settlement of the conflict.
