Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s Office, UN Office on Drugs and Crime expand cooperation

On September 21, Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan Kamran Aliyev received a delegation led by Roberto Arbitrio, Chief of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Terrorism Prevention Branch.
Welcoming Roberto Arbitrio’s visit to Azerbaijan to attend the 4th Baku Security Forum, scheduled for September 21–23, Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev expressed confidence that the visit would contribute to further strengthening cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Office and UNODC, particularly its Terrorism Prevention Branch.
The Prosecutor General highlighted Azerbaijan’s strategic location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and its active role in ensuring security along the Middle Corridor, as well as in combating corruption and organized crime.
The meeting also addressed effective cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Office and UNODC, including the successful organization of a high-level plenary session on “Mobilizing Law Enforcement for Enhanced Climate Action” during COP29 in Baku in November 2024.
The sides highlighted the Sixth Plenary Meeting of the Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities, held in Baku on May 20–23, 2025, with more than 300 participants from 92 countries, as an important example of cooperation.
They also discussed expanding cooperation with UNODC’s Terrorism Prevention Branch on emerging terrorist threats, terrorist financing, links between terrorism and organized crime, critical infrastructure protection, and the misuse of new technologies and virtual assets for terrorist purposes.
The Prosecutor General underscored the importance of the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, to be held in Abu Dhabi on September 26–October 1, noting the close coordination between Azerbaijan’s prosecutorial authorities and UNODC on joint side events.
He also stressed the importance of continuing active cooperation with UNODC in combating terrorism, transnational organized crime and corruption, preventing environmental crime, and strengthening international cooperation in criminal justice.
The sides also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
