ALL 11 MEMBERS OF ARMED GANG ACCUSED OF GRAVE CRIMES APPREHENDED
The National Security Ministry’s Public Relations Center reports that Kamran Asadov, a military officer serving in the Defense Ministry’s unit “N” deployed in Khanlar province of Azerbaijan, having plotted with the radical Wahhabi group, which he was a member of as well, stole 4 submachine guns, 1 PK-type light machine rifle, 20 hand grenades and a large quantity of submachine-gun cartridges, and escaped from the unit.
Having received the information on the group’s intentions to commit terror acts against several foreign embassies in Azerbaijan, the Ministry of National Security has prepared and carried out a special operation to avert the criminal actions.
As a result of the operation conducted on 27 October in a house located in Baku Sabunchu district’s Mashtaga settlement, where some of the group members had been in hiding, the gangsters were arrested, with one of them killed while attempting to show an armed resistance.
A part of the stolen ammunition was found and withdrawn in the mentioned place, and the remaining part in the area of Islayilly province.
On 30 October, other members of the gang - Kamran Asadov, Farid Jabbarov and Bakhtiyar Orujov - made an armed attack on the LUKoil petrol station in Baku. Opening fire, they seriously wounded one of its employees, took the money from the till and speed off the scene.
As a result of intensive search operations carried out by the Ministry of National Security, Elshan Mammadov, Vugar Aliyev, Kamran Asadov and Farid Jabbarov were detained on 9 November. Later, one more member of the group Bakhtiyar Orujov was arrested in Baku.
During questioning, Orujov confessed to the group’s intentions to commit terrorist acts against the U.S. Embassy in Baku and release - with the use of the stolen ammunition - their “religious brothers” from the Gobustan closed prison, in which they are held for preparing terrorist acts in the country, as well as to the armed attack on the LUKoil petrol station in Baku. During the detention, he handed over the last two of the hand grenades stolen.
Thus, all of the eleven members of the armed gang accused of grave crimes have been apprehended, with 4 AKM-type submachine-guns, 18 full submachine-gun magazines, 1 light machine rifle “PK”, 20 hand grenades and other ammunition withdrawn from them.
The Ministry of National Security assures the public it will continue to resolutely suppress illegal actions against the society and statehood, and to take necessary measures to defend national interests and maintain security and stability in the country.
