Norway to temporarily ban AI glasses in some public places
Baku, October 5, AZERTAC
Norway's government announced Monday that it will introduce a temporary ban on the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered glasses in selected public places, citing concerns over privacy and unauthorized recording.
The government said the proposed ban would cover locations where people regularly gather, including parks, beaches, museums, shopping centers and public events, according to broadcaster NRK.
It could also apply to schools, kindergartens, playgrounds and leisure clubs, as well as health institutions and fitness facilities with changing rooms and showers.
Digitalization and Public Governance Minister Torgeir Micaelsen said the government was concerned that AI glasses could allow people to be photographed, filmed or recorded without their knowledge.
The government said it would submit a proposal for the temporary ban to parliament as soon as possible.
The planned restrictions are intended to provide time for an expert group to examine the challenges posed by wearable technologies and advise the government on permanent national regulations.
The government said it is not proposing a blanket ban on AI glasses or other wearable technology.
Authorities will also consider whether universities, colleges and other higher education institutions should be included in the restrictions.
Education Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun has also asked Norwegian municipalities to ban AI glasses in schools.
