‘AZERBAIJAN’s DEFENSE BUDGET WILL REACH $2bn’

Azerbaijan’s defense potential will be strengthened, and the country`s defense budget will reach $2 billion, President Ilham Aliyev said Monday.

The President`s statement came during a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers to discuss the country`s socio-economic progress in the first quarter of 2008.

He said over the past five years, Azerbaijan`s military and defense expenditures increased from 150 million dollars to 1.3 billion.

President Ilham Aliyev also said there are several international organizations who condemn Azerbaijan’s increasing its defense budget, and accuse it of arming.

“They should know that over the last four years, Azerbaijan’s state budget has seen ten-fold increase”, he said adding raising military expenditures will continue being a part of increasing the state budget.

President Ilham Aliyev said Azerbaijan has the greatest defense potential in the region.
