CoE COMMISSIONER MAKES ANNUAL REPORT ON HUMAN RIGHTS IN PACE
Thomas Hammerberg, Council of Europe (CE) Commissioner for Human Rights made his annual report on human rights for 2007 at the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
The Commissioner noted millions of citizens of CoE member states have become refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) as a result of conflicts. This is a global issue for CoE, and it must be resolved urgently, said Mr. Hammerberg.
Ganira Pashayava, member of Azerbaijani Parliamentary Delegation to PACE said it is regretful that the fact that more than one million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs as a result of Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan had not reflected in the report.
Azerbaijani MP also asked the Commissioner a question on the fate of Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs.
Answering the question T. Hammerberg said he had prepared a report after his visit to Azerbaijan in September, 2007, and relevant recommendations on this issue had been reflected in the report.
The Commissioner said during his trip he had visited refugee camps in Azerbaijan to familiarize himself with the plight of the disappointed people.
He particularly stressed the Azerbaijani government has done substantial work to improve the lives of refugees and IDPs.
