COE TOP OFFICIAL DISCUSSES HUMAN RIGHTS CONDITIONS WITH CHAIRMAN OF SUPREME COURT
Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, who is in Azerbaijan for a 5-day high-level visit to assess the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, met Friday with Ramiz Rzayev, the country’s chairman of the Supreme Court.
Rzayev briefed the visitor on reforms implemented to modernize court system, to increase efficiency of judgment, to ensure the rule of law. The chairman of the Supreme Court said all these measures promote the protection of human rights and freedoms.
He went on to say that the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan closely cooperate with influential international organizations, especially with the European Court of Human Rights.
They also touched upon the provisions of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, as well as application of Case-law of the European Court of Human Rights by Azerbaijani courts.
For a short period of time, Azerbaijan has joined several conventions, including the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms after it became a full member of the Council of Europe.
According to Rzayev, apart from trainings and seminars for judges, international events on human rights-related issues have been held in Baku over recent years.
Hammarberg stressed the importance of developing relations between the European Court of Human rights and Supreme Court of Azerbaijan.
