Kazakhstan sends first batch of oil from Kashagan field to Baku

Kazakh tanker Taraz loaded with oil from Kashagan deposit has departed from Aktau Port and is heading to Baku, Azerbaijan, Kazinform News Agency reports.
According to KazMunayGas, oil was sent in line with the President’s task to develop alternative directions for export of domestic hydrocarbons.
The oil is set to be then transported via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline system towards the Mediterranean Sea.
This step is expected to contribute to further development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.
In 2022, Kazakhstan’s KazMunayGas and Azerbaijan’s SOCAR signed an agreement on Kazakh oil transit.
In March 2024, KMG and SOCAR inked the Agreement on Phased Increase in the Volumes of Kazakh Oil Transit. The document provides for increase in oil deliveries to 2.2 million tons annually.
Kashagan is the largest oil and gas field in the Kazakh section of the Caspian Sea. Located 80 kilometers south-west of the city of Atyrau, it occupies an area of 3,375 kilometers. The Kashagan reservoir is around 4,200 meters deep below the shallow waters of the northern part of the Caspian Sea.
In November 2024, Kashagan oil field resumed operation to full capacity after a month-long closure for essential maintenance.
