Latvian President: We regard Azerbaijan a reliable and important partner
Baku, April 24 (AZERTAC). Latvian President Andris Berzins has said his county considers Azerbaijan “a reliable and important partner”.
“Latvia is determined to achieve overall development of its relationship with Azerbaijan,” President Berzins told speaker of Azerbaijan`s parliament Ogtay Asadov as they met in Baku on the second day of the Latvian leader`s official visit.
“We have a 20-year long history of diplomatic relations, and the ties between our countries are developing.”
The Latvian President touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, saying his country supported Azerbaijan`s policy on the issue.
“We think that the dispute must be solved peacefully, consistent with the norms and principles of territorial integrity of the states and international law,” President Berzins added.
Parliament Speaker Asadov praised the relations between Azerbaijan and Latvia. He noted the role of high-level reciprocal visits and meetings in expanding the bilateral cooperation.
“Our countries have so far signed 28 documents, and work continues to strengthen a legal framework for our future cooperation,” said Mr. Asadov. He also emphasized the importance of inter-parliamentary cooperation, praising activities of friendship groups at parliaments of Azerbaijan and Latvia.
“Our parliamentarians are also effectively cooperating in international organizations,” the parliament Speaker added.
