Martin Jol resigns as manager of Ajax
Baku, December 7 (AZERTAC). Martin Jol has quit as manager of Dutch side Ajax after a poor run of form by the four-time European champions.
The former Tottenham boss left the Amsterdam club after a 1-1 draw with NEC Nijmegen on Saturday which put them fourth in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Ajax travel to AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday but cannot qualify from the group stage.
Jol is one of the names linked with the manager`s job at Newcastle after the dismissal of Chris Hughton on Monday.
Jol, 54, was coach of Tottenham from 2004 until 2007 before he was replaced by Spaniard Juande Ramos.
After spending the 2008-09 season with Hamburg, Jol joined Ajax and guided them to second in the league last season, won the Dutch Cup and qualified for the Champions League.
Former Netherlands defender Frank de Boer will take temporary charge at Ajax until the winter break begins on 24 December.
Ajax general manager Rik van den Boog released a detailed statement expressing his regret at Jol`s departure.
Jol, former Southampton manager Alan Pardew and ex-Aston Villa boss Martin O`Neill are some of the names thought to be in the running to take over at Newcastle.
It is the second time this year that Jol has been linked with a return to the Premier League.
In July, Jol was close to taking over at Fulham following the departure of Roy Hodgson to Liverpool but he ended up staying with Ajax.
He agreed personal terms with the London club but talks broke down when Fulham said an exit clause in Jol`s Ajax contract was no longer valid.
