MEETING IN MILLI MAJLIS
Opening the meeting Milli Majlis Chairman Murtuz Alasgarov said the project would promote further development of US-Azerbaijani relations. Relationship between the countries, according to him, is of strategic character. “Undoubtedly, a key role in this was played by nationwide leader of Azerbaijan, President Heydar Aliyev, who visited the United States more than once, and met with high-ranking US officials. During the last visit in February 2003, Heydar Aliyev met with President Bush. Azerbaijan and USA are allied against international terrorism; we are realizing joint energy projects”, the Speaker added.
Speaking of the work of the parliament of Azerbaijan Murtuz Alasgarov let the meeting participants know that the Milli Majlis holds two sessions a year; it has ten commissions working on continuing basis to draw up bills and documents, which are further submitted to the parliament for discussion.
The parliament of Azerbaijan is a member of many reputable organizations. The groups of friendship and cooperation with other countries exist here, American-Azerbaijani friendship group has recently been formed. Congress members visited Milli Majlis many times.
Touching upon Armenian-Azerbaijani, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, speaker of Azerbaijani parliament noted that although the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe had adopted a document recognizing Armenia as an aggressor that keeps Azerbaijani lands under occupation and refuses to abandon the territories where estimated one million IDPs must return. The aggression resulted in devastation and plunder of 900 settlements, over 700 schools. Speaker urged the guests to widely inform the American society on the issue.
Then, Murtuz Alasgarov responded to numerous questions of meeting participants.
