OMBUDSWOMAN MEETS COUNCIL OF EUROPE COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
The Human Rights Commissioner of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmira Suleymanova met Tuesday with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammerberg.
E. Suleymanova informed the visitor about the work done to promote human rights and freedoms, and noted the importance of cooperation in this area with the Council of Europe, an authoritative international organization. She stressed that the promotion of human rights is an important part of the democratic development of Azerbaijan.
Ombudswoman noted the need to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict on the basis of norms and principles of international law and within the framework of territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
Hammerberg said he will develop a report on the conditions of the promotion and protection of human rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan. The COE top official expressed his views on a number of issues, including the freedom of media.
Ombudsman brought to the visitor’s attention the appropriate measures undertaken to implement the National Action Plan on Human Rights approved by the Azerbaijani President last year.
They also discussed other issues of mutual interest, including the further prospects of cooperation.
