RUSSIA DONATES $2 MILLION TO AZERBAIJANI IDPS

Through the UN World Food Programme, the government of the Russian Federation donated $2 million to the internally displaced persons in Azerbaijan.

WFP country director for Azerbaijan Lynne Miller said that the donation will help bolster poor IDPs who were driven from their homes by the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The money will be spent on the grain and vegetable oil to meet the needs of the IDPS for four months. After Russia became one of the most lavish donors of the WPF in 2003, it granted $44 million to the WFP for its operations around the world.

In the wake of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, about 1 million Azerbaijanis found themselves refugees and IDPS in the early 90s of the last century. WPF, which started working in 1994 in Azerbaijan, provides aid to 154 thousand people.

L. Miller pointed out that IDPS are still unable to earn their living. They rely on the humanitarian aid.

The WFP’s $15.9 million project is to expire in mid-2008. WPF needs to fill a 38% project gap to continue the financial support. The donors include Azerbaijan (USD 3 million), Russia (USD 2 million) and Japan (100 thousand). Private donations make up $69 thousand and multilateral donations $4 million.
