Spanish unemployment falls for first November in years
Baku, December 3 (AZERTAC). The number of people registered as unemployed in Spain fell by 2,475 last month, the first decline for the month of November since the current system was introduced in 1997.
Unemployment normally picks up in November as the tourism sector slows down after the summer.
The consensus estimate was for an increase of 50,000 people.
According to official data, the total number of unemployed is 4,808,908, a 98,909 decrease over the last year.
Unemployment rose by 1,060 among women to 51.56% of the total while 3,535 less men were unemployed.
Unemployment fell in nine autonomous regions, led by Valencia (-8,329), Andalucia (-4,897), and Basque Country (-3,567). Unemployment rose in the other eight regions, led by Baleares Islands (9,012) and Catalonia (4,512).
1,241,479 new job contracts were signed in the month for a 7.79% increase from a year earlier.
Employment Secretary of State Engracia Hidalgo pointed out that the situation remains challenging but the figures confirm a favourable trend in registered unemployment and hiring over recent months, in accordance with other improvements in economic activity.
