“Thor Heyerdahl and Azerbaijan” conference ends
Baku, October 30 (AZERTAC). “Thor Heyerdahl and Azerbaijan” academic conference has wrapped up in Baku. The four-day conference was co-organized by Azerbaijan University of Languages and the University of Oslo. It marked the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s independence, the 200th anniversary of the founding of the University of Oslo and the 30th anniversary of Thor Heyerdahl`s first visit to Azerbaijan.
The conference featured discussions and heard reports on 5 subjects: “Thor Heyerdahl: A presentation”, “Heyerdahl’s “Odin theory”: Background”, “The “Odin theory” - Archeological evidence”, “Heyerdahl’s work studied from various angles”, and “The “Odin theory” - Methodology and various approaches”
The conference brought together scholars from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia and Norway.
The conference was aimed at bringing together scholars from different fields of expertise in order to discuss the theories of Thor Heyerdahl - a field of common interest.
Heyerdahl is the most famous Norwegian in Azerbaijan, and also very popular, for many reasons: he visited Azerbaijan no less than four times, during an epoch when not many people from western countries did go there. Moreover, he developed good relations to Azerbaijani leaders; he also played a part when Statoil was established in the country.
