UN General Assembly adopts resolution on Olympic Truce

The UN General Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution on the Olympic Truce for the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, according to Xinhua.
The resolution, titled "Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal," urges UN member states to observe the Olympic Truce individually and collectively within the framework of the UN Charter.
According to the Olympics' website, the Olympic Truce is "a ceasefire and guaranteed protection during the competition period," ending conflicts from seven days before the start of the XXV Olympic Winter Games until seven days after the conclusion of the XIV Paralympic Winter Games.
The resolution calls upon all UN member states to cooperate with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee in their efforts to use sport as a tool to promote peace, dialogue, tolerance and reconciliation in areas of conflict during and beyond the period of both Games.
In her remarks at the General Assembly, IOC President Kirsty Coventry said that the Olympics create a space where people meet "as fellow human beings," urging that sport and politics be kept separate and that visas not be denied for political reasons.
The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be held in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, next year from Feb. 6 to 22 and March 6 to 15, respectively.
