WORKING GROUP ON AZERBAIJAN REGISTERED IN US CONGRESS

Working group on Azerbaijan was officially registered in the US Congress on 24 March, AzerTAj correspondent reported. Co-chairmen of group are the representatives of state Pennsylvania, Congressman - Republican Kurt Weldon and the Congressman - Democrat from Texas Solomon Ortis. It has to be reminded that both Congressmen headed the delegation of the American legislators that visited Baku in August last year. The working group is supposed to comprise 20-30 members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Co-chairman Kurt Weldon informed about registration of the Working Group on Azerbaijan at the meeting held on March 25 in the Congress with the Minister of Defense of Azerbaijan Safar Abiyev. According to congressman Weldon, the re-created Group will strengthen protection of interests of Azerbaijan in the Congress even more and will give a new pulse to the American - Azerbaijan cooperation. He has characterized Azerbaijan as the strategic partner to the US, has expressed gratitude to the Republic for participation in peace-making operations in Iraq and in global struggle against terrorism.

It is notable that for today from among the countries concerning to the post-Soviet space, the Congress has separate working groups only on Ukraine and Armenia.
